The Unbranded Brand
"The Unbranded Brand is jeans with no name, no branding, no washes, no ads, no gimmicks. Just great denim at a great price! Wow, what a concept, only paying for the product itself... crazy, isn’t it?" That is written on the tag and on the website. Basically, they are no nonsense jeans made out of rope dyed Japanese Selvedge Denim.
These are raw selvedge denim jeans, which means that they will stretch and become larger when you wear them over time. They will also distress and mold to your body and how you move. The longer you wear them without washing them, the more distressed they will become. Washing them is like locking in the look.
They come in three styles: skinny, tapered & slim straight. At Modern Dignified we feel the best option is the slim straight, modern without looking like you borrowed your girlfriend's jeans.
Typically raw selvedge denim jeans are anywhere from $120 to $250, but these are reasonably priced at only $78 a pair. Currently, they are being sold at Urban Outfitters, but they will probably expand out with time. They are a refreshing pair of jeans, just plain raw denim.

Spring Essentials - White "Natural" Denim
White has made a come back, big time. It was seen in a lot of fall fashions, including often at the Modern Dignified headquarters. That momentum is carrying into spring with white or natural or wheat colored denim popping up everywhere and we are quite happy.
Nothing says spring like a plaid shirt and white denim pants. It is the easiest, simplest and hottest outfit of the spring, just ask my girlfriend.
Once again, J Crew, Band of Outsiders, Brooks Brothers and others have white denim this spring. But our favorite is American Eagle, they have a natural white denim jean that is only $39 and looks as good as any of the other top designers. It is in a straight cut and for the cost, just can't be beat.

Style Profile - Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake has a modern hip style. He balances a look that effortlessly flows between suits and casual wear, while looking equally as sharp in each. Part of the ease comes from each outfit being situation appropriate, which is key to any free flowing style.
Timberlake has been able to own certain looks which highlight his style while not defining it. He often wears fedoras, three piece suits and cuffed jeans, but these elements are not needed in each outfit for Timberlake's style to be complete.
Timberlake also utilizes variations on these key pieces, pairing a cardigan sweater with a leather jacket and tie. This is a great variation on the three piece suit. The sartorial contradiction in this outfit, is what I personally appreciate. The cardigan sweater and leather jacket are not typically worn together, it is this unusual pairing that makes the outfit really stand out.
Here are some additional looks from Timberlake for you to enjoy and gain inspiration from. He may be one of the better dressed young celebrities in Hollywood. Hopefully, if our youth emulates his style, our next generation will have a cool and good looking sartorial style.

Big Night Out - Rock N' Roll Chic
I spent a while debating with myself on what the outfit for tonight should be. Considering this is a Grammy's crowd, not the Oscars crowd, there was no need for black tie attire. The Grammy's is the Rock N' Roll or Hip Hop Awards show. It is a modern, young, hip crowd. Trendy, fashionable clothes
are everywhere. A well tailored suit is never out of style, but I felt like be a little trendier tonight. Especially since the suit I have in mind I am wearing this weekend to the Company Holiday Party.
That left me with deciding to go for a jacket, jeans and button down shirt. I went with the gray velvet jacket from Express. It was on sale for $115 and came in a tailored and slim fit and in my size is quite well fitting. It has slim arms and narrow lapels, both are great details that make the jacket feel modern. I am especially impressed with the slim arms, as they make the entire jacket look trimmer and are a detail that is often forgotten with most retailers.
With the velvet jacket I am going with plain dark blue jeans. No fading, no distressing, just classic denim in a modern trim fit. As we have preached, the best modern cut is the slim straight fit. Not too skinny and definitely not too baggy.
For the shirt I am going with a 7 Diamonds black shirt, with French Cuffs. It is a slim fit shirt and has a simple and nice stripes on the shirt. The buttons are gray iridescent, which is also a nice touch. I am wearing Gold Knot cuff links with the shirt.
To finish off the outfit are plain cap toe oxford black oxford boots. I should look appropriate for the event while not looking super trendy. Classic lines and simple designs. This outfit is not flashy, or try hard, which I am sure will be a popular combination among the crowd.

J. Crew 2010 Spring Collection
J. Crew in my opinion is the one of the best brands for presenting Sprezzatura style. Thanks to Frank Muytjens, J. Crew has created a very uniform style over the last few years. Especially in the last year or so. I feel that the brand represents the modern male fashion, preppy, tailored, sprezzatura, elegant, classic, cool while not being try hard. They seem to be blazing the trail, while the other brands are trying to keep up with their brand representation. I personally love the look and find quite a bit of inspiration in it.
Here is how J. Crew sees the 2010 Spring/Summer.
Navy Suit - The most classic suit in the classic American wardrobe, a navy suit. This is a lighter navy, which makes it stand-out from the crowd. It also prevents it from being misdiagnosed as a black suit. It has a modern slim fit without looking ridiculous. It also has the appropriate level of Sprezzatura: no socks, chambray shirt, slightly rolled cuff. It also has the appropriate level of classic elements: rounded toe wingtips, pocket square and navy suit. A great outfit.
This outfit looks like something worn by a Kennedy on Holiday in Cape Cod. Classic sunglasses, Sperry Topsiders, chinos and a button-down. A very casual cool weekend uniform.
The best part of this outfit is the tan shoes. I prefer the shoes to be oxfords and not bluchers, but I do like the bulk of the blucher, especially for a casual outfit. I also like the tie for this outfit is light colored and almost gets lost in the outfit. It is very Sprezzatura to wear the tie lose with a tie bar, very cool.
Tan suede desert boots, slim straight destructed jeans and a red chambray shirt. It doesn't get much more casual than this outfit, yet due to the color and textures it is still stylish. This outfit is appropriate for errands on a Sunday, but can still be worn on a casual date.
This is my favorite outfit of the J. Crew collection. This outfit would be cool in 50s or 60s or today. The outfit is a great representation of the American style while not looking cliche or overplayed. The green jacket with red plaid lining is a standout piece, without being over whelming. The blue shirt, gray sweater and chinos is classic and stylish and cool. The washed chinos make it sprezzatura and the slim lines make it modern. Also, the outfit is much more casual with the shoes, a more formal.
Chino suits are great for the summer, so are topsiders. The combination is classic and contradictory, a good thing for any outfit. I would lose the bow tie though.
Nice weekender bag, it looks like his father owned it, exactly the right look. A denim shirt and denim jeans can look horrible and the epitome of style, but due to the shoes, the Sprezzatura way the shirt is haphazardly worn and tucked in and the slim fit jeans, the outfit looks modern.
Who doesn't like a sweater with shorts? I always love a gray undershirt, that look never gets old. Throw on topsiders and the outfit is complete. I would lose the ugly ass big bag though. For the love of all that is manly, leave the purse carrying to the women.
Shawl collar cardigan fantastically classic and modern. It is a look that never leaves the closet of the stylish but is now being added to the closet of the fashionable. I still think you should wear it, I know Steve McQueen did. The chambray shirt adds depth to the outfit. Also, shorts with desert boots is the sartorial contradiction that is both modern and Sprezzatura, it is completely unexpected and appropriate.
In this photo I really dig the white blazer. It is a look that is perfect for the Spring/Summer. Make the blazer a shawl collar, slim fit and washed, and no one will think you just walked out of Saturday Night Fever. I also appreciate the chino suit jacket paired with the navy suit pants, it is a nice color combination.
The blue chino slim fit pants in this picture (on the left) are great. The color and the fit make them enormously useful. They go with almost any color in a closet and make an outfit standout. All that while still being classic and not standing out and making you look like a jackass.
Here is a close-up of the chambray shirt. It is an interesting shirt a good color and has depth since it has multiple levels of blue in the fabric. The tab color also makes it more interesting than the standard shirt. The military green belt is also a great touch. It is rugged and aggressive but also very stylish, especially when worn with a nice pair of chinos.
Could you add any more colors or patterns? Probably not, but the outfit still works. This is the ultimate Sprezzatura, it looks like he dressed himself in the dark, yet still "luckily" got it right. This is modern fashion at its best, unexpected, daring, classic and incredibly interesting.
J. Crew inpires me. Good job Frank Muytjens. By the way, Frank Muytjens personal style is also quite interesting. The shoes and purple socks are fantastic. I love that the socks match nothing on the outfit.

Always List - Jeans
The Destroyed Pair - This is for the jeans that have the torn up knees, the thrashed cuff, the stains on the legs, the worn out back pocket. One of two ways to get this pair of jeans: buy it or earn it. If you are going to earn it, go the A.P.C. way. If you are going to buy it, think about the Abercrombie & Fitch. Their Remsen slim straight destroyed jeans have a great fit and nice level of destruction. (Typically I hate A&F, but I do have to say they have great jeans).

The Favorite Pair - Do I really have to explain what makes a pair of jeans your favorite? This pair is not as torn up as the one above. It looks worn in, but is not destroyed, hopefully only has one or two small holes.

The Nice Pair - Lastly, every guy needs a pair of crisp clean jeans that are for casual Friday at work, the important date, the dinner date or for meeting her parents. These are the jeans that you wear when slacks are too dressy, but you still have to look good. These jeans go better with a suit than a shirt, but hell they are jeans, they can be worn with anything. The Nice Pair of jeans are dark wash, non-faded, no distressing, no whiskering, no holes. We at DF recommend Selvage denim (also called selvedge denim) as it has cleaner lines. J Crew and the Gap have nice selvage denim jeans.

Raw Denim - A.P.C. Jeans

A.P.C. is a french company that actually sells something worth talking about, raw denim jeans. Raw denim jeans are completely unwashed and untreated denim. The denim is like a blank canvas awaiting your masterpiece of style. The more you wear the jeans the more they get broken in, distressed, faded and become a secondary skin. A.P.C. by all regards make the best raw denim around. You can certainly find other companies, like Nudie & G-Star, that make good raw denim jeans, but judging by the pictures above I will stick with A.P.C.
Even though you aren't supposed to wash A.P.C. Jeans for a year (minimum of 6 months). During that time you are supposed to just wear them. Letting the denim breathe, distress and mold to your body. Raw Denim jeans are supposed to be bought a size too small and then as you wear them they will gain an inch in the waist. At first they are very stiff and uncomfortable, but over time they will break-in and easier to wear. Eventually they will be the softest, most comfortable pair of jeans, but you have to have patience to get there and ignore the fact that they need to be washed. I only wish that I had found these jeans in college, then I would have had an excuse not to wash them and a pair of jeans that were so uniquely broken in. I also want to hire someone with exact body type to break them in for me (but I guess that would take away part of the fun).
In the picture above you can see the brand new pair of A.P.C. jeans next to a pair that has been broken in for a year. I think the look is very cool and natural looking, unlike so many pair of "distressed" or "destroyed" jeans that are sold today.
